Anavar vs Winstrol: Oral Cutting Steroids Compared
August 16, 2026 · 6 min read · By Editorial Team
Anavar (oxandrolone) and Winstrol (stanozolol) are the two DHT-derivative orals that dominate cutting discussions, and the honest short answer is this: Anavar is the milder compound on the liver and the androgenic side, but it’s expensive and heavily counterfeited. Winstrol produces a harder, drier look and stronger strength effects, but it hits your lipids harder and frequently trashes your joints. Neither aromatizes, so water retention and gynecomastia aren’t the battle here. Liver strain, cholesterol, and product authenticity are.
What they have in common
Both are 17-alpha-alkylated oral steroids built from DHT. The 17aa modification lets the molecule survive first-pass liver metabolism, which is exactly why they’re orally active, and it’s also the root of their hepatotoxicity. Because they’re DHT derivatives, neither can convert to estrogen. That shared “dry” profile is why both show up in cutting protocols: the payoff is hardness and strength retention in a calorie deficit, not scale weight.
They’re also both fast. Anavar has a half-life of ~9.5 hours with serum levels peaking around 90 minutes post-dose. Winstrol (Oral) sits at ~9 hours. Reported protocols for each split the daily dose morning and evening so levels don’t fade by the afternoon.
Side by side
The numbers below come straight from our compound dataset. The PK values for oxandrolone trace to published human pharmacokinetics; stanozolol’s published PK data is equine, so human values are modeled estimates.
| Anavar (oxandrolone) | Winstrol (stanozolol) | |
|---|---|---|
| Class | 17aa oral, DHT derivative | 17aa oral, DHT derivative |
| Half-life | ~9.5 hours | ~9 hours |
| Oral bioavailability | ~63% | Effectively complete |
| Aromatizes | No | No |
| Hepatotoxicity | Mild (for a 17aa oral) | Moderate |
| Lipid impact | Significant HDL suppression, dose-dependent | Marked HDL suppression plus LDL elevation |
| Joint effects | Uncommon | Joint pain common (synovial drying) |
| SHBG | Lowers modestly | Lowers strongly, raising free hormone fractions |
| Medical approval | Weight regain after trauma, surgery, infection | Hereditary angioedema prophylaxis |
| Label dosing | 2.5–20 mg/day, divided | 2 mg, 1–3× daily, tapered |
| Reported community dosing | 10–50 mg/day, 6–8 weeks | 20–50 mg/day, 6–8 weeks |
| Estimated detection window | ~3–4 weeks (long-term metabolite) | ~3–6 weeks (3′-hydroxystanozolol glucuronides) |

Where they actually differ
Strength and dryness
Winstrol is the more aggressive compound. It’s favored late in contest prep for a reason: pronounced dryness, vascularity, and strength that holds up under heavy dieting. Part of that comes from its unusually strong SHBG suppression, which raises the free (active) fraction of every other hormone in the system. That amplifies whatever else is running alongside it, for better and for worse.
Anavar is subtler. Strength retention is real but the cosmetic effect is a fuller, less grainy look. Its high anabolic-to-androgenic ratio and lack of 5-alpha-reduction are why it carries the “mild” label, and why it’s the most commonly reported AAS in female protocols, though virilization risk at low doses is lower, not zero.
Lipids: the real cost
Both drugs suppress HDL, and this is where Anavar’s gentle reputation needs an asterisk. Oxandrolone’s HDL suppression is significant and climbs with dose, even at the lower end of community ranges. Winstrol is worse: marked HDL suppression with LDL elevation on top. Of everything you can measure on these compounds, the lipid panel moves first and recovers slowest.
Liver strain
Anavar rates mild for a 17-alpha-alkylated oral; Winstrol rates moderate. Neither is free of hepatic cost, and both community protocols (6–8 weeks) assume liver enzymes are being watched, not hoped about.
Joints
Joint pain is Winstrol’s signature complaint. Stanozolol strips water broadly, including synovial fluid, so lubrication drops and heavy training on top of that produces the dry, creaky joints users report. It reverses after discontinuation. Anavar doesn’t typically cause this, which matters if your training involves loaded barbell work.
Cost and counterfeits
Oxandrolone is one of the most expensive orals per milligram and one of the most faked. Because real Anavar is costly to produce, underground product is frequently underdosed or substituted with cheaper compounds, a problem discussed constantly in community reports. Winstrol is cheap by comparison, so counterfeiting pressure is lower, though unregulated-lab purity concerns apply to everything in this market.
Harm reduction and monitoring
A few principles that hold for both:
- Reported protocols run 6–8 weeks for a reason. Both compounds are liver-active orals, and the hepatic and lipid costs compound with duration. Longer isn’t better here.
- Running them together stacks the damage, not the benefit. Two 17aa orals means double the first-pass liver load and roughly additive lipid damage, with little to show for it. The harm-reduction consensus is to pick one.
- HPTA suppression happens on both. Anavar is comparatively gentle at lower doses, but “mild” doesn’t mean “no suppression.” Post-cycle recovery planning still applies; see our PCT fundamentals guide.
- Medical context matters. Oxandrolone’s FDA label tops out at 20 mg/day for weight regain in compromised patients, and stanozolol’s hereditary angioedema label runs at 2 mg doses. Community performance doses sit well above both, so “it’s an approved drug” says nothing about safety at those levels.

Frequently asked questions
Is Anavar safer than Winstrol?
On balance, yes, with caveats. Oxandrolone rates mild on hepatotoxicity versus moderate for stanozolol, and it doesn't cause the joint dryness Winstrol is known for. But both suppress HDL meaningfully, and Anavar's mild reputation leads people to run it longer or higher than they should. Safer is relative; neither is safe.
Why does Winstrol cause joint pain but Anavar doesn't?
Stanozolol reduces water retention broadly, including the synovial fluid that lubricates joints. Less lubrication plus heavy lifting equals the commonly reported joint pain. Oxandrolone doesn't strip water to the same degree, so the effect is uncommon. Winstrol-related joint pain typically resolves after discontinuation.
Can you stack Anavar and Winstrol together?
People do, but it doubles first-pass liver exposure and roughly doubles the lipid damage for marginal added benefit. Both are 17-alpha-alkylated orals working the same non-aromatizing, dry-look angle. Harm-reduction guidance is to choose one oral per cycle, not two.
Which is better for a first oral cycle?
If someone is determined to run an oral, Anavar's milder hepatic profile and lack of joint effects make it the lower-risk choice on paper, assuming the product is genuine, which is a big assumption given counterfeiting rates. The honest harm-reduction answer is that neither is a good starting point, and bloodwork before and after is non-negotiable.
How long are Anavar and Winstrol detectable in drug tests?
Anti-doping labs screen for long-lived metabolites, not the parent drugs. Oxandrolone's long-term metabolite is detectable for weeks after use (our dataset estimates roughly 3–4 weeks), and stanozolol's 3′-hydroxystanozolol glucuronides for roughly 3–6 weeks. This is published anti-doping science, not guidance on evading testing; detection windows vary by assay and individual.
