Methylene Blue (oral)

Also called Methylene blue · Methylthioninium chloride · MB

The attraction for lifters and biohackers is more energy, clearer focus and workouts that feel easier. Some people report trying methylene blue for those goals. Reports vary widely, and the small human cognition studies do not establish better strength, endurance or recovery.

Why does it show up in bodybuilding and biohacking?

Methylene blue is discussed for energy and mental clarity rather than as a muscle-building hormone. Some people describe it as mitochondrial support or report workouts feeling easier. For the reader, the useful question is what changed in everyday life or training—not simply whether a product affects mitochondria.

What do people actually notice?

Reports range from clearer focus and more energy to no change, feeling on edge or trouble sleeping. Some people are taking several other supplements at the same time. A good workout or an enthusiastic first day cannot isolate which change caused it. The human study highlighted in the dose card examined a short-term memory task, not strength or conditioning progress.

Is it a straightforward pre-workout?

There is no established pre-workout dose or timing from the reviewed human research. Feeling less exertion is different from proving better performance or safer cardiovascular strain. Sleep, perceived energy and actual training output are separate outcomes worth distinguishing.

Why do the form and medication list matter?

Community questions often mix up oral liquids, capsules and injections. This page covers oral research; the IV medical product has a different use. Drop counts cannot be compared without knowing the concentration. A prescriber or pharmacist should check serotonergic medicines and relevant medical risks, including G6PD deficiency. Aquarium or industrial dye is not a medicinal substitute.

Model details: Methylene Blue (oral) · relative timing

Compare timing and buildup for this compound. The values are not blood concentrations or a measure of strength.

Timing assumptions and sources

Walter-Sack 2009 Table 1: mean oral plasma half-life 18.3 h and Tmax 2.2 h after a single 500 mg aqueous solution in healthy adults. Transfer to other oral products or much lower doses is an assumption.

One 1 mg input peaks at 1 relative unit after a single dose. Other amounts scale proportionally; overlapping doses add when accumulation is on. Different compounds use separate relative scales.

Absorption half-life assumed

  • Absorption is inferred to reproduce the stated peak time with the stated terminal rate; this is not a fitted source absorption parameter.
  • A single 1 mg input has a peak of 1 relative unit by definition. Repeated-dose addition and linear scaling are mathematical assumptions; the example dose does not calibrate the curve.
  • Aqueous solution timing is not a validated model of capsules, lozenges, extended-release tablets or IV treatment.
  • Plasma, whole-blood and reduced/oxidized species results are not interchangeable. No conversion from dye color or drops to a blood concentration is made.
  • Peak-normalizing 3905 ng/mL at 18.3 h predicts more than twice the observed AUC∞ 51171 ng·h/mL, so this entry intentionally has no absolute calibration.
  • Walter-Sack et al. — aqueous oral methylene blue pharmacokinetics

    Original 2009 crossover study, 16 healthy adults enrolled/15 completed. Table 1 oral 500 mg aqueous solution: plasma Cmax 3905 ng/mL, Tmax 2.2 h, half-life 18.3 h, AUC∞ 51171 ng·h/mL and AUC 0–24 33777. Full author-uploaded text reviewed. Sampling/matrix/formulation differ from IV and capsule studies.

Safety and interaction notes Read the limitations and discuss clinical questions with a professional

The IV label warns of potentially fatal serotonin syndrome and contraindicates use with G6PD deficiency because of hemolytic anemia. Oral research excluded important risk groups; exact oral risk cannot be inferred from the chart.

Common questions

Why would a lifter take methylene blue?

Reported goals include more energy, clearer focus and easier-feeling training. Those are reported motivations, not demonstrated muscle-building or performance effects.

Does mitochondrial support mean more strength or endurance?

A proposed cellular mechanism does not establish those outcomes. The human cognition experiment discussed here did not test a training program or athletic performance.

Why do the online experiences sound so different?

People report benefits, no change and unpleasant effects. Products, other supplements, expectations and health circumstances differ, and the anecdotes cannot separate their contributions.

Can I compare one person’s drop count with another’s?

Only if the actual concentration and amount per drop are known. A count of drops alone is not a dose, and oral and IV products are not interchangeable.

What if I take an antidepressant?

Have the exact medication list and product reviewed before use. Methylene blue has serious serotonin-related interaction potential; do not stop or change a prescribed antidepressant to accommodate it.
